How to get Windows 10 help | Windows 10 free tech support - PC Advisor

Windows 10 help is available in several forms: from Microsoft in the form of the Contact Support app built into Windows 10, from PC Advisor's extensive catalogue of Windows 10 tutorials, and from independent Windows 10 forums. We detail all your Windows 10 help options within this article.

We explain how to get help and advice with Windows 10. Windows 10 tips. Windows 10 guides. Windows 10 tutorials. Windows 10 tech support, and Windows 10 forums. Yup: this is the page about Windows 10 help. See also: how to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 10.

Like it or not - and I like it -Windows 10 is here. And if you run most versions of Windows 8 or Windows 7 on your PC, laptop or tablet, you will be nagged until you accept the upgrade to Microsoft's all-new operating system. In general this is a good thing. Windows 10 offers new features, should be more responsive, and has been at least partly shaped by user request.

But it isn't perfect, and Windows 10 could be different to what you are used to. For a lot of people that difference will cause problems - Microsoft is not famed for guiding people through change in quite the way that Apple or even Google is. (Here's how to downgrade to Windows 7 or 8.)

So here we outline three great ways to get help with Windows 10. If you have a Windows 10 problem, the answer is here.

How to get help with Windows 10: from Microsoft

We wouldn't recommend you go down this route for just any minor complaint, but when you just can't find the help you need Microsoft has provided a safety net. In Windows 10 Microsoft has added an app called 'Contact Support. Just as you might imagine, this app gives you an easy way to contact Microsoft's Windows Support when needed.

The easiest way to access the app is to type "Contact Support" into the search box. In just a few quick clicks you can be connected by chat or phone to Microsoft Answer Desk. This is a one-on-one connection with a 'Windows 10 expert'. (You may use the term 'call centre operative', but either way you are getting help).

From this app you can also connect with Microsoft's own Windows community forums, or request that someone from Answer Tech rings you as soon as possible so you don't have to wait on hold or schedule a call at a convenient time. It even lets you know the current waiting time.

Again, we wouldn't suggest you always go to the Contact Support app. But when times are really bad, it is a great final call.

Office 2016 Inking

Good news for Mac users who want to check out pre-release builds of Microsoft Office: Now you can.

Microsoft is opening its Office Insider preview program to Mac users. Launched in November, the program lets Office "power users" check out new features before they're released to the general public.

"Now, Mac users can also get early access to Office innovations," Microsoft's Kirk Koenigsbauer wrote in a blog post.

Mac users can join the Office Insider program via the Microsoft Auto Update tool. To access it, just start anOffice 2016 for Mac program, then select Check for Updates on the Help menu.

Meanwhile, Microsoft this week outlined a number of new Office features it has on tap, including collaboration improvements and a revamped "inking experience," so you can more easily use your finger or an Apple Pencil to work on documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and notes. For starters, Microsoft is adding a new Draw tab to its Office apps that should make it much easier to find the inking tools. You'll also soon be able to easily transform hand-drawn shapes into perfect-looking circles and squares, for easier diagram creation.

The software giant is also bringing its real-time co-authoring feature, first released for Word 2016 on Windows desktops last fall, to PowerPoint mobile and Windows tablets. The feature lets you see what others are typing in real time for easier document collaboration. Plus, the next Preview builds of Word and PowerPoint for Android will include "basic co-authoring and AutoSave capabilities" already available on Word and PowerPoint for iPhone and iPad.

Koenigsbauer said these new features will be rolling out "across platforms over time" as part of the regular Office 365 updates.

Cold weather tips to keep pipes safe -

Posted by [email protected] on January 11, 2016 at 1:55 PM Comments comments (0)
Winter finally feels like it has arrived. According to, it is going to stay cold for at least the next several days. Indiana American Water would like to remind homeowners to be prepared for freezing winter temperatures and act to prevent costly plumbing repairs.

"During winter weather, water pipes need special care to keep them from freezing," said Indiana American Water President Deron Allen. "Weatherproofing your home against the cold will not only lower your energy bills in the winter, but it will also help protect your indoor plumbing against the threat of breaks."

Indiana American Water encourages its customers to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of freezing pipes that can burst.

Know the location of your main water shut-off valve. If a pipe freezes or bursts, shut the water off immediately. The main water valve is usually located along a basement wall next to the water meter or where the water supply enters the building. Know the areas in your home where water pipes are most vulnerable to freezing crawl spaces, outside walls, outside faucets, unheated rooms, basements, garages or attics. Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines. Make your basement airtight by repairing broken windows, insulating walls and closing off crawl space vents and doors. Protect your pipes. Wrap exposed water pipes with insulation or UL-listed heat tape. Newspaper or fabric may also work as temporary measures.Drain water lines to outside faucets. Disconnect garden hoses and, if practical, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.Keep your thermostat at 55 degrees or higher. If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, battery-operated freeze alarms are available for less than $100 that dial a user-selected phone number if the inside temperature drops below 45 degrees. This and the help of a neighbor or family member to check the house regularly can be very effective in avoiding damage.

When Temperatures fall below zero:

Allow a small trickle of water to run overnight to keep pipes from freezing. The cost of the extra water is low compared to the cost to repair a broken pipe. Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures.

If you pipes freeze:

Shut off the water immediately. Dont attempt to thaw frozen pipes unless the water is shut off. Freezing can often cause unseen cracks in pipes or joints that will leak when thawed. Apply heat to the frozen pipe by warming the air around it, or by applying heat directly to the pipe. You can use a hair dryer, space heater, or hot water. Be sure not to leave space heaters unattended and avoid the use of kerosene heaters or open flames. Once the pipes have thawed, turn the water back on slowly and check for cracks and leaks.

How to perform a clean install of Windows 10 - CIO

Every great operating system sputters, falters and fails at one time or another, and Windows 10 is no exception. Whether caused by a Windows Update snag or a good app installation gone bad, you'll probably need to take some substantial steps to fix the OS at some point.

For example, after allowing Microsoft to automatically upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on one of our office computers, the PC hummed along just fine for nearly a month before the cracks began to show. That's when the Microsoft Office applications stopped working properly. They crashed frequently, and Windows offered recovery versions of productivity files during nearly every computing session. Uninstalling and reinstalling the applications didn't seem to make a difference. We also noticed a rash of minor annoyances that went away, temporarily, only after rebooting. Then one day the Start menu became inaccessible and Windows 10 displayed this message:

Crucial error: Start Menu and Cortana aren't working

That was the death knell for the current installation of Windows 10. Although several websites offered step-by-step instructions for fixing the problem, none of the solutions worked for this PC and we were left with a machine that barely functioned. Any time we clicked the Start button, which happened a lot owing to force of habit, we had to reboot. Thus, it was time to take recovery measures.

Microsoft offers several recovery options once a computer hits the skids:
